How to Draw Minecraft-Style Characters: A Step-by-Step Guide for Kids
Minecraft-style characters are built entirely out of squares and rectangles — no curves at all — which makes this one of the easiest drawing styles for beginners to get right on the first try.
Iron Kids Co. is a family fan tutorial and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Mojang or Minecraft — we just love drawing blocky characters as much as our kids love playing.
Drawing a blocky player character
- Draw the head. One square, near the top of your page.
- Draw the body. A slightly wider rectangle right below the head, with no neck — blocky characters connect straight through.
- Add the arms. Two thin rectangles hanging down from either side of the body.
- Add the legs. Two thin rectangles below the body, with a small gap between them so they look separate.
- Draw the face. Lightly divide the head square into a grid, then color in two small square eyes and a simple mouth — keep everything blocky, not rounded.
- Color it in. Flat, solid blocks of color — a shirt color, a pants color, skin tone for the head. No shading needed; flat and blocky is the whole look.
Drawing a blocky green mob
- Draw a tall rectangle for the head — taller than it is wide.
- Add a boxy body directly below it, no neck gap.
- Add four short, thick rectangle legs.
- On the face, use small squares to build a pixel-style frown and two square eyes — think "built from tiny blocks," not drawn with curved lines.
- Color the whole thing green, with a few darker green square patches scattered on for texture.
